Commissioning a Matsuura MX-520 PC4 from Day One for SA Manufacturing

Matsuura MX-520 PC4 5-axis machining centre commissioned at SA Manufacturing

The challenge

SA Manufacturing had just taken delivery of a brand new Matsuura MX-520 PC4, but their new programmer wasn’t due to start for another four weeks. Production couldn’t wait: the machine needed to be earning its keep from day one.

Having worked with Wayne before, they asked us to come in and get everything up and running.

What we did

  • Workholding: selected CERATIZIT ZSG4 vices mounted on Solid Point zero-point plates from Thame Workholding, for fast, repeatable setup changes that make the most of the machine’s capabilities.
  • Tooling library: while the workholding was on its way, built a complete standard tooling library, including aluminium and stainless steel face mills, end mills, ball nose cutters, carbide drills and thread mills.
  • Cutting tools: sourced additional tools from MA Ford, CERATIZIT and ITC, chosen specifically for machining stainless steel, then assembled, loaded and measured every tool ready for production.
  • Programming: programmed six production parts in hyperMILL and proved out each job on the machine.
  • Documentation and training: created setup sheets and work instructions, and trained one of their existing machinists to run the MX-520 before handover.

The result

On its first night the machine ran every pallet unattended. SA Manufacturing now has a fully automated machine running lights out, with a proven tooling library and documented processes for their new programmer to build on.

You’ve not only got the machine producing from day one, but you’ve also helped us maximise its capability with the right workholding, tooling, proven programmes and operator training. Most importantly, you’ve left our new programmer with solid foundations to build on, giving them the confidence to develop our five-axis capability and introduce new technology as we continue to grow.
